Good Morning,
Rather than send over the weekend, we will roll up the advent calendar on a Monday to ensure that you see each day / improvement point.
If you follow on Twitter then you'll see these updates anyway, but nonetheless, an email makes things easier because the content is all there for review, rather than having to remember to save the post, or similar.
The purpose of #badvent is not to highlight issues, or showcase an image, indeed the imagery is purely for illustrative purposes, we have thousands showing the same thing.
Any "sin" on here is impacting customers and can be avoided, there are always extenuating circumstances of some description but reducing the frequency in which these 25 "badvent" based elements are featured across retail will improve things for customers.
Ready? On with the show!
December 3rd:
December 3rd saw in store generated signage feature in our retail badvent calendar.
What can one say about store generated signage?
It's often well meaning but the signage can end up looking like a chilling ransom demand...
No good can come of this.
December 4th:
December 4th saw us review the blockage of fixtures/bays by colleagues and their replen cages.
Shoppers fighting over pallets and cages to get their shopping.
We understand the need to replen, but there's a limit to the impact and your store routines are not a priority versus customers.
December 5th:
December 5th saw our badvent focus turn to culture / "cult" element that develops in some retailers.
The 13/10 brigade are famous for this of course (a personal favourite of mine) with dissenting voices around improvements or otherwise often drowned out.
Folk not 'on the bus' are dismissed as negative or being in some way not part of the team.
Realism is given a P45 but the warehouse floors are clean.
Balance is vital.
Today - December 6th:
Our badvent focus turns to an an old favourite today; the ambient clearance area.
It's no one's job and is so indicative of the way the store is run, some of them are near health hazards.
They always worsen when there's a great focus on losses, but that's wrong... Check yours today!
Until tomorrow!
Stay safe and trade well,
A leading provider of market intelligence in the retail sector.
It is expensive to rationalise SKU (products) in any retailer; the markdown has to be factored in at the margin, traders don't like it as they have to take a hit. Asda committed the usual cardinal sin when faced with falling sales, alongside an avalanche of retail media, they added more range for various reasons. No doubt back margin was part of it, plus traders trying to grow sales in a retailer that's struggling is never an easy task. Which means short cuts can become very palatable. I am...
It's a definite step change in the market with volumes falling, customers making more shopping trips and inflation touching 5%. Customers react to this, and the sentiment has been weak for some time. The recent NI changes have not been swallowed by the sector (my shock!) but instead are being passed on to customers. For people heavy sectors like hospitality, retail and food production, any cost increase is bad news but the NI changes feel like a spectacular own goal that is only going to hurt...
